Are speedfit fittings compatible with Hep20 pipe?

Providing you use the correct pipe insert for the pipe then the actual fittings are all pretty much compatible. While the outside diameter of the pipe is standardised, the internal diameters can be different. There is some info regarding this issue in the Marely Equator design guide, available at

I've had problems with a significant percentage of joints when using speed-fit fittings with Hepworth pipe - I still have a hole in the garage ceiling from just such a joint. I've never had any problem with all Hepworth installations. I've also had no problem with the joints I repaired by simply removing the speedfit fitting and putting in the Hepworth equivalent.

Well, yes, I am reasonably sure. First, I've done this myself with no problems, and second, 22mm is 22mm, whether made by Hep or JG.

Hmmm, I've done it with problems, maybe you were lucky. I've used a JG fitting on Hep pipe and it leaked, used a Hep fitting and all was fine. The JG fitting was used on JG pipe and it worked, obviously the JG\Hep combination at fault then! 22mm isn't neccesarily 22mm, there can be slight descrepancies in tolerances between brands, and frequently are, just look at waste pipe sizes between brands and SW\pushfit. ..

But that's a very different situation - it's intentional, because of the different materials (pvc/abs for SW, pretty much anything for pushfit).
I've not found discrepancies, and one very good reason people like Hep and JG avoid them is so that you can use standard 22mm copper pipe with their fittings - after all, they are advertised as being compatible with all standard copper sizes!
What problems did you encounter? What kind of leak was it?

In my experience both sorts of fittings work equally well on all sorts of pipe. I can only think that the poster you had trouble with the JG fittings must have not used them correctly. JG fittings are definitely significantly harder to fully push home relative to the push required to insert the pipe initially. Hepworth fittings are generally stiffer but less of a two stage process. Perhaps that was the reason for the trouble.

Erm, a wet leak! Nothing major IIRC, although I was working 6" from a 1/4 turn valve so it never developed past that stage, I imagine it could have though. Although both makes do seal onto copper they don't seem to work with each other, I think it may have more to do with the sealing mechanism than pipe sizes. I never looked into it, I just remember to use the same make together when needed. ..

Maybe, never had a problem with JG fittings on JG pipe or Hep fittings on Hep pipe so I wouldn't have thought so. I wonder if it has something to do with the age of the Hep, did they change the size at any point, I know they changed the style of fittings a couple of times. ..
